Default Paint meter readings

I’m looking at a 1973 Porsche in Europe. The car has been repainted to a high quality in its original metallic color. Paint meter readings are all over the place. Ranging from 280 on top of the fenders to over 500 on the lower doors.

Knowing it’s been repainted, should I interpret the >500 readings as indication of body filler in those spots? Or could it just be an area of very think paint?

are these microns?

so 280 to 500 = 10.7 to 19 mils?

The paint is pretty thinker, but that is to be expected of a repaint done by hand and its not uncommon to have higher readings lower on the panels (think about the manual motions of painting by hand). Usually body filler you'd see much higher numbers in mils. Newer cars are in the 5 mil range. A magnet can also be used to test. And yes there may be some filler unless the painter confirmed they filled all work with lead, even then there is the primer layer which will remain thicker in some areas...

Honestly at this stage of life, a thorough visual inspection by an expert is usually a better indication...
