Default Targa top issues

Hi all. Proud new owner of a 1981 SC Targa with 100K on it. I don't have a lot bad to say about the car - I basically look for excuses to drive it - "Sure, I'll go and pick up some milk, honey..."

The targa top needs refinishing, although it's really just the vinyl, and I think I can handle that on my own. But there is another issue which I haven't seen addressed anywhere - it's the leather finishing on the front braces.

I'm not sure I'm describing it accurately. When the top is on the car and I'm sitting in the driver's seat, right above my head are the two larger bars that fold inwards when I collapse the top. There is leather padding along them that consists of several pieces. It's worn and, in some places, coming off.

How do I replace it? Is it available or do I have to remove it and go to a custom upholsterer?

If this isn't enough info I can post pics.

Thanks for your help,

Mick

I know what you're talking about, but I've never seen these looking that bad on any targa. I'd say you'll need to have a pro re-do those parts - I've seen nothing in the aftermarket about them, even with very comprehensive targa rebuild kits.

Just take them out, (they are pasted to a foam-like padding) measure their dimensions. Then go and buy new material and cut it using the old ones as a model.
If you can do the vinyl top by yourself, then this is going to be a snap for you.

That's kind of what I was figuring. Has anybody here tried this?
