I bought a set of SSI heat exchangers for my non-European 80 3.0 SC; thin flange (I think). A friend told me that the heat exchangers I received in a box marked "3.0" from MotorMeister, are for a 74 911 and will not fit my car.

How can I visually determine if they will or will not fit? I don't want to pay for shipping the old ones back AND for shipping the new ones (again) if I don't have to. I don't want to take my car apart to find out. Also, my "friend" at times is right on and sometimes......well, he's my friend what can I say.

Deralik:

You have no worries, Sir.

There are only two kinds of SSI's: thin flange ones for 2.0-3.0 motors and thick flange ones for 3.2's.

If you are still unsure, take a picture and e-mail me directly,...

The thick flanges also fit some 3.0 911SC's. I think the later models.

These photos were posted in a Thread on Pelican.

You can use thin flange on a car that came with thick flanges, you can either change to shorter studs, or use a spacer of some sort. On my 82 I used a nut slightly larger than the stud.

Ron:

Although any version of the SSI's can be fitted to any engine, the thick-flange version with the O2 bung was made specifically for Motronic-equipped motors.

Its all about what length studs one has,....

RoninLB,

I have a 78Sc and found a SSI for $250, but it is thick flange. How does one fit the thick flange to earlier SC models. Thanks for your help. Andy

Oh.. I didn't know that.
I was happy to see the bung because I want to install a smog machine using 50/50 glycerine and water for tailgaters.

you'll need longer studs for a good job. you could probably do a partial *** job by using those stud extensions. There seems to be plenty of usable torque with those extensions. I have no experience with them. . removing old exhaust studs could be an issue? if it is a possible few hundred $ expense at a shop then maybe the extensions are cheap and doable.
You gotta research the cost of new long exhaust studs.

You could also swap out all the short studs for long ones.

when I spoke to SSI he said it was inconsistant for 2.7, and SC. He never mentioned the 3.2 at all.
