Post 911 Engine Recommendation

Hi guys, I would like to swap my 2.7L engine for a 3.2L engine. My car is a 77 911S. Do you know what's the value of an used 3.2L engine?
Between the following two choices, what would you recommend for my car?
85 3.2 Engine with 40mm Webers, Early Exaust, 72K milies, price is $5,000 (245 horse power)

Or

1988 3.2 stock Engine with 41K miles, price is $5,000. (217 horse power stock)

Are these engines priced right? What do you think it would be a better choice for my car?

Your input will be appreciated.

Price sounds a little high, but OK.

If you can have both motors checked out by a p-mechanic, that would be a great idea. Also, find out if the conversion was done by a reputable source. It can make a HUGE difference, especially if the motor is out and a PITA to try to run on a bench. Are either motors in a car that can be driven?

Valve guide wear was a problem for some of the 3.2's, but I thought the problem had been corrected by 88, so you'll need to confirm this as well from a more knowledgable person.

Be sure that the deal includes ALL the parts for the conversion, including the Motronic brain and anything elso that makes this a complete conversion package. There are a lot of guys out here who can probably be more specific on this point.

For the Weber motor, make sure nothing came off the stock motor that didn't go back on that you might want or need...AC compressor or brackets, heat exchangers, etc.

The choice also depends a lot on what you plan to do with the car....track, daily driver, Sunday afternoons, etc. My choice would probably be the stock motor for a couple of reasons:

-Mods on the other might (might is the key word)mean the motor was run hard for at least some of its life, and could exhibit high wear.

-Webers are nice, but depending on how adjusted and jetted might suck a lot of gas at a buck and a half a gallon.

-Potential unknowns in the conversion quality.

For not a lot of $ you can take a stock 3.2 pretty close or better to the HP of the Webered motor like: a high performance exhaust, cat bypass pipe(for track only, of course :-) and rechipping the brain.

Good luck <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Thank you both for your input. Both of these engines are sold online. One on Ebay and the other one at pelican's classifies board. A physical inspections on these motors won't be available. I was just checking on the price value on these motors. I think they are a bit pricey also, unless they are in perfect condtions. I also think the 88 would be a better deal, since it's a newer motor, less mileage, no alterations to the stock configuration.
I think I would rather wait for a good 3.6L engine, since it can be had for about $2k more.

FOr Jim: I'm in Martinez, on the East bay area, about 1 hour from you.

Once again, thank you both for your input.

Regards
