Just had my oil changed by a Porsche shop and they put in Mobil 0-W-40. I asked and they said it is what the factory recommends? is this correct, the owner's manual says 10-W-40.

The 0/40 is more readily available in the US than the 10/40 and you'll be fine. I believe that PAG has modified their recommendations this last year.

0W-40 wasn't available in 1992, and has become the standard Porsche fill. I think you'll find that grade of Mobil 1 is currently one of the Porsche recommended oils. As a general purpose oil, that covers about every environment except perhaps the very hot or the track.

Hi,

I have used Mobil 1 15W50. Really the grade depends very much of your climate and the time of the year. Basically, for hot climate like where I am 15W50 is more suitable.
Go for a serach for oil grades( may be in the 964 forum) and you will find a lot of information. Some people tend to believe that 15W50 is better for old 964 engine and less likely to leak and of course many people would disagree.
I think Bill is right and you can't go wrong with Mobil one.

Cheers!

I put 0W40 in my '89 3.2 and it was so thin, the car wouldn't stop smoking.

I put 15W50 back in and the smoking stopped.

Hi:

I think there is a good deal of wisdom and experience expressed here on this thread,...

Personally, I would not use 0w-40 in any aircooled engine unless the outside temps were rather cold. That low viscosity stuff was/is intended for the watercooled cars, especially with Vario-cam.

Hi,
you may be interested in this;

Look under "Lubricants for the 928"

A very good lubricant which works well at very high temperatures and has an excellent HT/HS viscosity is M1 SUV 5w-40 (or its brother Delvac 1 5w-40) This is a "mixed fleet" type oil with excellent viscosity retention and low usage rates. It is a Group 5 full synthetic API CI-4/SL - the top of the pile!

I have many millions of kms experience with this product in my heavy OTR 500hp Detroit Diesel powered trucks. I recently undertook a "tear down" inspection on one engine after 1m kms and after using 100k oil change periods throughout its life. There was virtually no wear and MTU-Detroit Diesel recommended reassembly with no new parts

I have used this lubricant in my cars for a number of years

Regards
