With the 911 R and 911 S/T, Porsche has brought back legendary models from the past in recent years. For this reason I wanted to learn more about their legendary predeccessors. While there is more information about the R, there is almost no verifiable information about the S/T. Can someone help me out with an overview of the history of the S/T from 1969 to 1972?

What I have learned so far is that S/T was never an official name but only an internal designation by Porsche. The S/T wasn't just another model next to the S, E and T, but was based on the S and apparently also had its VIN. Apparently the 1972 2.5litr. cars were initially called SR but also got the S/T name over time. Apparently they were a variety of production methods like being pulled off the production line and built up as a factory built car or being built up by a customer team using a standard car. However this doesn't apply to the 2.5 SRs which were all built by the factory, factory car or not.

There is so much information out there but nothing is really verifiable. So please help a fellow 911 lover out and share all the information you have about the 911 S/T 1969 - 1972!

All my 911 books are on a bookshelf in my home office, and i have collected a ****load of them since i bought my 89 in 2009, i guess
i must have been feeling helpful that day.
It's the last time ... i swear, really !
Something like when people ask for help on the forums and they never respond, at least it entertains the other readers.

The two absolute best sources I've seen are...

1. Porsche 911 ST 2.5: Camera Car - Le Mans Winner - Porsche Legend
2018 by Thomas Imhof, Michael Keyser, Jürgen Barth

2. Issue #010 of 000 Magazine covers the ST in depth

These are hard to find at reasonable prices, unfortunalty. The Imhof book was available on the Suncoast website until recently. I guess it sold out. I believe they have it for purchase at the Museum in Stuttgardt.

Agree that the 000 Magazine article is quite comprehensive.

 

Good recommendations, between Imhof's and John Starkey's books. I wish I could say we had Issue 010 in stock, but these are currently sold out. We may reprint 010 as we did 001-004, but I don't have a timeline right now.

It is, however, tough to see copyrighted material redistributed here on Rennlist as freeware. Yes, there's the enthusiast in me (and I've added a lot here on RL for no upside), but I'm also a writer/editor/publisher—and thus know how much work goes into these kinds of niche publications.

Is Excellence mag still an ongoing concern ? , i had it all the way from day one , but my piles of mags got so high , some i never even got to so i gave up on it.. But that was the first place i saw your name.
