Default Vintage 911 Air Conditioner

I'm looking to purchase a late 60s, early 70s 911. Unfortunately, from what I understand, these cars were not fitted with factory AC. As I live in Texas, this is vital. Are there any existing kits that can be retrofitted? Has anyone attempted this?

Thanks for the help!

Why not look for the best of the best of air-cooled, a 78 to 83 SC Targa? These optionally came factory equipped with A/C.

go to 912bbs.org, and go to the texas board.

there is a guy on there, Norv Parr, who had an a/c system retrofitted to his 912E. He can give you all the info, as it is a place in TX that actually does this (i believe there is only a 1hp loss at full blast too), but i do believe it is pretty pricey.

M3-- Your information isn't quite correct. Early 911s were fitted with A/C as early as 1970. But in 100% perfect operating condition, its no match for a stifling Texas summer afternoon. And I can't agree with WWest. The 1978-83 Targa is a great value but the 1986-88 Coupe with the G-50 tranny is a superior car. Check out this months issue of EXCELLENCE. I'm not alone in that opinion.

Just a minor correction... The G-50 trans cars are model years 1987, 1988 and 1989.

The 1986 3.2's still had the 915 trans.

I stand corrected.

But deep down I know every 915 and G-50 owner is jealous of me and my trusty 901.

And air conditioning? I don't need no stinking air conditioning. Or is it me stinking because I don't have air conditioning?

87-88-89....

Are UNIQUE...which is what makes them unusually expensive to repair.

Speaking as a 88 special edition owner.

The AC still sucks even in the 87-89 years. There is an upgrade. Pricey, $1500-3000. I have an 87 and am considering this upgrade. My mechanic says, well... it's a lot of money for a limited use car and no guarentees it will be that much better. Though it has been done successfully.

I have the York-supplied "OE" air in my car. This was a dealer installed option. the system is robust and stronger than many of the aftermarket systems, except for the one-lung compressor which is crap unless you live in Alaska. I replaced mine with a Sanden and seem to have good cooling right up to mid-90's in both temp. and humidity. Of course, your oil temp goes up 15 Deg., and you may need to install a carerra cooler if your car has no external oil cooling, but as with all things Porsche, nothing cannot be solved with a sufficient infusion of Greenbacks. In TX, you may need an auxiliary condenser as well. There are several suppliers. The front systems seem to make more sense than the rear fender ones, but the supplier of it swears they work. Anyway, fill up the bank account, and fire at will!
