Question steering shaft wobble inquiry

on a recent drive I noticed my steering wheel seemed to vibrate/wobble more than usual when driving around town. I can move the wheel up and down slightly. obviously this bugs me even though its very minor

I removed the plastic steering box 'cover' and can see the shaft moving around a bit

is there a quick fix for this or should I be worried.?

thanks guys

You don't say what year your car is, but it sounds like the steering column bushing is shot. Pelican Parts sells an easy fix for 74-89 cars. It's part number F-347-739-02 and it costs $12.75. Here's a link to on article on installing the bushing: Bushing Article

It's about a 30 minute project, maximum. Very simple.

RMA--
I just did this on my '85 - very, very simple and very quick. be sure to center the wheels before removing the steering wheel. Makes it much easier to level the steering wheel upon reinstallation.

there are also several threads on the Pelican website discussing this as well.

I marked my steering column and steering wheel with a scribe. That made it very easy to realign the wheel upon reassembly.

Good luck.

Also,
don't use the steering lock t o hold the wheel on nut removal and watch the windshield. Some have put the breaker bar into the windshield, as I recall. Also get the 944 (I think metal bushing, NOT the 911 plastic aftermarket. Research the forums first, there have been many posts 0n the topic.
regards,
Steve

I believe the part number in my previous post is for the metal sleeve.
