Default Fuel Gauge Inop

Hello- I searched around and couldn't find anything definitive. I just picked up an '86. Fuel gauge doesn't function. It sits perpetually at 3/4. Where do I start? Is the level sender the common culprit? The gauge itself?

Appreciate the insight. Have a bunch of little projects to do on this car.

The car in question

should have shorted wires to ground by the sender see, if the light comes on , if it pegs the gauge.. if so its the sender.

Sorry we didn't get you a response. It is probably worth trying to fix your old sender, and if you can't, at least you have the replacement.

When you pull it, you'll see it is a long aluminum cylinder. There is a small nut on the bottom. If you remove the nut, the aluminum cylinder will slide off. You'll see a black float that rides up and down on two wires. I'm wondering if your float is stuck.

Incidentally, when I pulled my sender I found the little nut had fallen off and the aluminum tube was laying inside the tank. Luckily I was able to fish it out. I replaced the little nut with a Nyloc version so hopefully that won't happen again.

Oof.. well lets hope I don't have to go fishing around the fuel tank for one single nut. Appreciate the picture and info. Will check out the condition of the current unit and see if I can salvage it.

Thanks all!
