Non-Detergent Gear Oil
Has anyone heard of non-detergent gear oil? Motor Meister recently rebuilt my 5 speed for me and requested I break it in with non-detergent 85-90w gear oil. I have looked all over Houston and I cannot find it. Any suggestions? Who makes it, who carries it?
Thanks,
Stephen

Stephen:
I'd suggest that you get a gallon of Swepco # 201 85w-90 gear oil.
Thats everything you need and no "break-in" of that tranny is required unless something is wrong with the internals.
Gear oils are rated by their EP index from GL-2 to GL-5. All Porsche trannies need a GL-5-rated lubricant to handle the high stresses on the ring & pinion gears.
BTW, detergent and nondetergent oils really applies to engines which must deal with the byproducts of combustion; something not found in transmissions.

Thanks Steve. That is what all my race friends said as well. I am just paranoid and especially after reading all the posts about MM on other forums.
I just hope I have few problems with the rebuilt engine and transmision.
Thanks again,
Stephen
