Post Painting Black Fuch Rims & glue for rubber molding

Hi can anyone recommend a black paint for Fuch rims and any tips for painting. Also, the rubber molding that runs below the doors from the front to the back is loosing in spots, any recommendations for glue?

Thanks in advance.

I use the 3m Weatherstripping glue to attach rubber to my (car) body.

I used Wurth black lacquer followed with a clear coat. 3M makes a flexible masking tape, which is green (#210?), which eases the masking process. Got it at a local auto parts/paint supplies store.

David,

I re-painted the centers of my Fuchs a couple of years ago. I used Wurth Black Spray Paint in a semi-gloss finish. Two cans did all four wheels. This paint has been excellent and still looks like new.

The key is to make sure the wheels are absolutely clean of any dirt or grease. I washed them with soap and water and then a degreaser to get them spotless. I dried the wheels and then scuffed up the old black paint using a 3M scuff pad. Then tape off the the rims where the existing black paint lines are; I used regular masking tape and newspapers. Make sure you tape a straight line. I then applied two coats of the Wurth spray paint, allowing the first application to dry before applying the second coat. Carefully remove the tape after the second coat has dried.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Bruce

David--
the original paint used on the fuchs is wurth matt lacquer, which has higher heat tolerance than the wurth enamel. check with the guys at www.carcareonline.com - they stock the full wurth line and help you with your project.
I've been hand-painting the centercaps as a hobby and wanted to make sure that everything matched.
good luck

Thanks Guys for all the useful info. Regarding the rubber strip. It is still attached in 90% of where it should be. I recently bought the car and have spent the last 7 months getting the car to run and drive correctly. On to the fun stuff, I have a feeling the molding was attached for some time because it does not want to stay close to the body. I think what I am trying to say is that it's shape is a bit off. Currently if I put glue behind it and pinch it against the body, it will seperate probably a centimeter or two from the body? Will that 3M bold relatively quickly (seconds vs. minutes)? Should I pull the whole thing off and reapply all at once?
Thanks again.

Ditto on the Wurth lacquer - I bought mine through carcareonline as mentioned above. 2 cans was plenty for 4 wheels and lugnuts. For masking, I used 1/8" wide pinstripe tape following the rim curvature. Then I used regular masking tape, overlapping the outside edge of the 1/8" width of the pinstripe.

I used Krylon semi-flat black, proceeded by Krylon gray sandable primer. So far I haven't seen any durability problems but then again I only put about 1500 miles a season on my car.

MM83targa,

Good call on the pinstripe. I'm sure the rubbery construction of the tape makes it much easier to keep the tape line smooth around the circumference of the rim. Thanks for the tip.

re: the rubber pieces running underneath the doors: rip off the old ones and order new ones. they're called door sill plates or threshhold plates - cost about $30 each. then clean off the old glue (pain in the _ss)and attach the new ones w/ the double-sided tape that comes already on them. The process is described in September's(?) Excellence. You'll be happy when it's done, especially if yours look like mine did.
