Default Electrical short - Key on - All Fuses out??

My '73.5 911T is having electrical problems. I start it and it will die in about 5 minutes from a dead battery. Shut it off, the batteries recover in about 5 to 10 minutes and it starts up and repeats the sceario. Sooooo, I pulled all the fuses and it still happens. Also, when it does run, the alternator is not charging the batteries. Voltage stays at about 11.8. If I just tun the key on and don't start the car, same thing happens. I guess I have a serious short.

Could it be in the Alternator itself? Should I pull the Alt/regulator and have them tested. Is the regulator with the alternator or located elsewhere? When I remove the pulley on the fan, I need to lock it from turning. I've been advised to put a tool or screwdriver in one of the small holes, Is there a hole behind it to lock into, or do I just put a screwdriver thru it and turn it till is locks onton something? Any advise appreciated....Thax...Bob S.

The best way is to trace the flow with an ammeter, but you are talking serious flow here and I bet you are right about the alt. probably one or more blown diodes. Suggest isolating the alt and checking draw at battery again. Good luck.

Glad I could help!

A rebuilt should cost no more than about US$150.

Lake, you should never try to charge the battery with the alternator. Always start with a fully charged battery or you'll put too much stress on the alternator.

Have had the alternator "rebuilt" and install and new regulator. Problem still persists....Battery discharges quickly will all fuses removed and all accessories off.....I'm thinking a bare wire somewhere in the battery/charging circuit....
