Default Ignition Wires

What is the "skinny" on the "home made" ignition wires that are described in the Jun2004 Excellance?

Ends & Boots from Porssche dealer, 7mm wires from Carquest ? I need to replace the ignition wires in my 84 911, Should I try the home mades and save about $100 bucks or go OEM?

Thanks
Rob

The connectors are pretty expensive if you buy them by themselves. Then you have to go get wires, which is not always sold in bulk. Plus, a $20 or more crimper is required. When all is said and done, you are close to the ready-made set price. So, go to Apex and buy the whole set of wires for $120 or thereabout. Save yourself and trouble, your wires are 20 years old, replace the whole set and be done.

Thanks for the insight. There are a zillion APEX on the web. Can you provide me with some site specifics.
Thanks again

Try this:

http://www.apexperformance.net/

I just purchased a set for my 88 Carrera a couple of months ago. They had the best prices around. But, like everyone selling Magnacors, they were back ordered. Expect to wait a few weeks.

Good luck

That is the one. Magnecors wires are back on line so it should be quick.

I replaced my lead set in my 1987 3.2 with Magnecor.....a good result was had.

Only minor gripe is the seals could be better. They tend to fold under the weight of the connector.

...my two cents!

My shop (who just won Cannonball One Lap of America, for what it's worth) claims they have rarely seen a set of wires from a mid-80s 911 go bad. They claim that the problems usually occur at the ends, especially at the spark plug connector. My #1 spark plug connector goes bad once a year! I recall that it was $30 or so...seems a tad expensive, but it is an easy fix.

So, if you see any green or white corrosion inside the spark plug connector, it is most likely shot.

The Beru connectors have the transistors in them and are located on the spark plugs in the hottest part of the engine. No wonder they crap out. I put Magnecores on my 88 Carrera about two years ago and voila, purrs like a kitten.

I used the Magnacor on my 79 SC. Excellent worth every penny and I noticed improved performance and gas mileage.

Are the ends that connect to the plug on the Magnecors better than the Beru? I always seem to have missing issues that are traced back to the spark plug ends of my OEM wires.

The ends on the Magnecors are different than the OEM's in that there are no transistors. It is all wire. the resistance is in the wire, not the ends that go on the plugs.

Does the lack of transistors on the wires cause static with the car's radio?

You can't have transistors in an ignition wire. Magnecor wires have resistance built in to the wires and will NOT cause radio noise. The KV85 is used in racing because it won't interfere with electronic engine controls. It's also great for street engines. The KV85 is the one you want. Check out their website. it's
magnecor.com (sorry, I can't post a link right now) You can buy them from
apexperformance.com.
