Default 911 L to S

Does the 68 911 L engine run the same engine as the s? Can you put S head and cams into an L to boost horsepower? If so, how much can you gain and what other things can you do to the engine?

thanks chris

Hi Chris..!

No - the "L" is a de-tuned "S" engine, so that Porsche could meet the new EPA Certs for that year. Can you modify the "L" to the "S" specs? Yes. In so far as increases to HP ratings, it depends what you want to do - for example - P/Cs, CAMS, ignition, headers, etc. - you can get more out then the ROW "S" (118 HP) compared to the 98 HP of the "L".

Great reference materials would be Wayne Dempsey's 101 Projects and
How to Rebuild and Modify Your Porsche 911 Engine 1965-1989. Also - Bruce Anderson's book would be really helpful in deciding what you'd like to consider in that rebuild as well... Oh - and reference books are "cheap" compared to "choosing wrong" as you are doing the rebuild

HTH!!!!

Can you put things such as pistons and cams in "L"s from "S" s engines? ("you can get more out then the ROW "S" (118 HP) compared to the 98 HP of the "L".)----I thought that the L got about 130 hp stock and the s got about 165hp?

Hey Chris!

At the engine- the specs should be 120/160 ("L"/"S") - but not at the RW.. And yes, you can add more then 40 HP at the flywheel - BUT - again, it depends on the mods you'd be planning to make??

And yes - Jen and I have a '68 L in the garage. And yes - I've rebuilt the engine.. And YES - I'd love to see pics of yours!!!

Best to you!!!

The L engine was in reality not a detuned S but more like a T or base 911 engine. The L was an S trimmed body with this lower HP engine. Keep the case, Crank, and carbs and throw away the rest. Mine was built with big heads flowed and port matched to PMO manifolds, 2.2 S P and Cs, Elgin cams, factory headers and lots of machine work. You will also need some stronger rods to hold it all together. I used Carillo. It screams but it is definitely the hard way to go fast. I have not dynoed the car but I know there is more than 40 added HP. You are also talking $10,000 per liter! Buy someone's finished proven engine if possible.

Best,

Don

I always thought the L was equivalent to an E...
