In the process of removing a stereo, speakers, CD changer and two alarms sytems I found a small black box in my 911.
It was under the passenger kick panel and had two big wire bundles. One went straight back to the engine and the other went up into the dash. Either towards the instrument panel or through to the trunk and the A/C unit. One of the cables had a Porsche label on it, but the part number was too smudged for me to read.
Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about? I'll get some pictures of it, but I don't know if that'll help much.
My three guesses:
1) Gauge related
2) A/C related
3) Convertable top related

Just a thought out-loud. When I replaced my radio antenna, I had to install a similar sounding black box that apparently is a relay, to raise the antenna when the radio is turned on and lowers it when shut off.

According to Allan Caldwell on the PCA website, on a 1978 911SC that little black box is the thermostat for the AC. I have the same thing in my 1985 Carrera.
"Output of the factory a/c system in the 1978 911SC was directed only through the center dash vents plus the small end vents in the dash and a single bulkhead vent just above the main tunnel. The a/c hoses going to those vents could be disconnected from the evaporator output chamber and connected to the normal fresh air/heater system. The bulkhead vent could be removed and replaced with a flat cover. The electrical control and wiring harness for the evaporator was located in the center console and attached to a thermostat in the passenger foot well bulkhead opening. Other than that, it would be mostly a matter of sealing the holes where the a/c hoses were routed in and out of the body. If your car had the front condenser, you would have to remove the blower and condenser assembly and close the opening in the trunk floor.
