Does a 1989 911 original paint finish have a clear coat?

 

It depends on the color.
My '85 Grand Prix White does not have clear coat.
I believe that in general the solid colors did not have clear, but the metallic ones did. And of course, things changed as years went by.
Sounds like you're looking at a specific one, so you may want to state the exact color so the experts can give a solid answer.

polish it , if white comes on the rag its single stage .. if its been repainted it could be base/clear

 

most were still single stage. Metallic had clear.
if you rub polish on a panel and it's not red or white etc, its not original paint.
