Default How to test a steering rack without removal?

There appears to be a small area to the right and left of top dead center where steering input doesn’t get immediately transferred to the wheels. Outside that zone steering is crisp. But after 38 years of ownership, I can’t recall if this has gradually occurred or if it has always been there. My 993 doesn’t have this dead zone. Is this normal and is there some inspection I can do to confirm a problem exists before I go to the effort to remove the rack for rebuild? Is there some bushing where the steering column connects to the rack that could be worn out?

I’m at 217k miles on the car. It’s a 1979 SC targa.

There is lots on info on out there…

But first I would eliminate any upper column sloppiness, the upper and lower column bearings, universal joints, mid shaft bearing in side the rubber insulating bushing and the puck just above the steering column shaft. I have found that the slop at centre disappears as you turn the steering wheel taken up by the torque from twisting all the components.
good luck.
Cheers,

Good stuff. Thanks very much. I’m going to check these items this week.
