Default New Porsche Owner + Rader Det. Q

I recently purchased my first Porsche after dreaming of owning one for 20+ years. I purchased a 1988 Targa - Guards Red with Black Leather, 87K miles. The car has been very well maintained and is an absolute blast to drive. Thanks to many of the Rennlist posters for the information I used in making my selection and finding a good PPI shop.

I live in a town where a red 911 stands out in a crowd - especially to the local police. I have a Valentine 1 radar detector, but it is very conspicuous on the front windshield. Does anyone know of any way to conceal a Valentine 1 (or a Passport 8500) so it's not visible from outside the car? I don't suppose anyone makes a remote antenna for the V1 or Passport 8500?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Steve

Valentine makes a plug that makes the V1 more stealthy, though you still have to mount the detector in your windshield.

Escort makes two remote models...the SRX and the SR7. I have the predecessor to the SR7, the SR1, in my BMW, and it is awesome. Always on, no fumbling with cords, and it looks stock (particlularly with the red lighting matching the BMW). The SR7 is about $800 installed, and the SRX is about $1600 installed (!). The SRX has extended range AND included laser shifting technology that supposedly actually works. (The SR7 has a laser detector instead...worthless IMO). Both are great for radar, though...I sometimes get a mile of warning on a flat highway. Highly recommended.

Hey Steve,

Welcome to Rennlist!

I keep my V1 mounted above the visor and have the remote display to the right of the steering wheel. I can post a picture if you like.

I have seen the V1 mounted in the Targa bar with the remote display used,

The SR-7 and the SRX are the same unit except the srx comes with the lazar deflector while the sr-7 it is a option. The srx is only sold to high end car dealerships. I am a escort dealer and we were complaining last yr when they had the sr1 and there was no add on and they will not sell dealers the srx. If you can get the sr7 installed for 800.00 that is a great price because it went up about 100.00 this yr and it takes about 4-5 hours to do a quality install on them and i would not do it for that price. If anyone wants escort i am a dealer and will give you good prices. www.soundfxny.com. the valentine as well as the escort come with optional diplay and mute switch that can be put anywhere but the main unit still has to be on the winshield. If you put it high up on the windshield and hard wire it , it will be more stealth than the cord hanging in the cigarette lighter

When I use my Passport 7500 (?), I put it directly on the dashboard. It's fairly hard to see the detector when it's in that location if you use the smart cord thing (for night-time driving). The drawback there is that some of its detection power is cut because it's partially blocked by the windshield wipers in front. I'm not sure how much the back seats and tail block it from behind. It still picks up radar (and, occasionally, laser) fairly well as far as I can tell.

Speaking of Laser and me being from NJ- are the NJ State Police going to Laser? I notice, every once in a while while on major highways (such as Rt 80 and, once, the GSP), the Laser warning goes off. It still kind of freaks me out because I'm not used to hearing it.

Adrian,

Seems like all the State Cops are using laser.
Sucks
