Hi all:

Yet another newbie. Just finished grad school (Ph.D., molecular biology) and am gainfully employed. I've been snooping around the net and this list and have found several 911s that look like they would be a blast to own. I found a 1994 RS America with 35k miles for $37K (is this a decent price) as well as there are several 97's 98's and 99's on this list that are in my price range. I have a couple of questions about 911s in general.

1 -- I live in Iowa and it gets icy up here in the winter, how do 911s behave in the ice (I'm originally from Texas, ice is something in your glass of iced tea)?

2 -- I am assuming a 911 can be a daily driver, can it also be an only car (I can fit my golf clubs in it, I'm happy)?

3 -- What kind of repair bills am I looking at assuming that the car has been well cared for?

4 -- Are 911s happy running on 10% ethanol gas?

thanks for you help and assistance.

tom.

Hi Tom:

Let me address your questions if I might.

1) $37K for an RSA depends on condition. You really must get a pre-purchase inspection for ANY car you buy and done by an expert.

2) 911's do very well in snow and ice IF, they have the proper tires. Use tall, skinny studded tires and you'll be fine.

3) Golf clubs are a tight fit, but possible,.. Many people use these cars as their only transportaion.

4) That depends on the outcome of any PPI. Its a variable.

5) They tolerate it but Porsche is adamant about not using such fuels, if possible. 92 octane or better is highly recommended.

Find a good, well experienced shop that really knows 911's to do your PPI. Its well worth the effort even if you must drive a good distance,....!

Tom, Steve's advise is as usual Gold
I will only add that you may want to look at Carrera 4's since you will be driving up there in the winter 4 wheel drive will be usefull. I have also tried in the winter the Nokian Hakkapelita WR tires and they are wonderfull! They also come in 16 inch and 17 inch Porsche sizes.
Finally if you narrow down the year of your 911 you might want to post your questions to the individual forum. 911's have internal factory codes as follows:

1. 911 from 1966-1989 is 911
2. 911's from 1990 - 1994 are 964's
3. 911's from 1995-1998 are 993's
4. 911's from 1999 to present are 996's

From the model years you described you are looking at a 964, a 993 and a 996.
There are differences between the 911 models in engine sizes, suspension etc especially 996's went from aircooled engines to watercooled, so I would welcome you to check these boards here and learn the pro's and cons of each model for a "virtual test drive" so to speak before you make you decision!
Good luck and welcome to Rennlist!
