Default which spark plugs for '87

Hi Rennlisters

About that time to change the plugs; any suggestions as to what is 'best' these days?

Car is an '87 euro spec.

Cheers in advance
James

Hi James:

You cannot go wrong with Bosch W5DC or W5DS's.

question for Steve, optional plugs for a stock 3.2L 88 Carrera engine are:
Bosch: WR7DC (copper- $2.00) and WR7DP (Platinum-$2.75), NGK: BPR6ES (traditional plug- $2.24), BPR6EGP (Platinum- $2.68), BPR6EIX (Iridium- $6.95), and BPR6EY (V-Power- $2.24). Which one of these (Bosch or NGK) would you recommend for my 88 Carrera 3.2L motor based on cost and performance? I currently use NGK BPR6ES plugs.

Spider:

First, I do not use the current Bosch Platinum (except the DPO-series) plugs. IMHO, they are just horrible and responsible for many running problems that users have with them.

I think the Bosch 7's are too warm for the Carrera and I would use either 6's or 5's, depending on how you drive. You may use WR6DC or WR5DC or WR5DS (Silver).

NGK's are fine plugs and all of your choices will work great. The Iridiums are really good.

Aw crap, I just got 6 platinums from Pelican. I did have running problems years ago when they first came out, but figure they had improved by now.

Any opinions on the Beru Silverstones?

Sushinav:

I hold the same opinion of the Beru's,(NFG)....

If you stick with Bosch or NGK, you will never go wrong.

@ Steve W: I've been running WR7DP's for many years in my 88 3.2 with zero issues. Daily driver, never race it, but I do keep it cleaned out
Now just rebuilt motor after 165k mi. Went to 3.4L with new JRC pistons. Looking at your comments about the 7s being too hot. So now I may try 6's. How will the higher compression at 9.8-1 effect the plug choice?

Thanks ahead

I would be nervous about running 7's in these engines as thats really a hot plug. The more compression you have, the colder the plug you need.

I'd be using 5's in that engine.

My very seasoned indy Porsche mechanic also avoids the platinum plug.. Causes weird and rough running conditions in certain cars.

Steve, my mechanic (Mike Callas) favors the Brisk spark plugs, any comments to that?

I've not been able to get the Bosch super copper plugs, so switched to NGK 6s. They work well enough for me.

Never used them so I cannot say how they compare.

I use either Bosch or NGK and never had any issues.
