I want to switch out the center reflector on my 1986 with an updated 1987 style (reflector in reflector). Are they interchangeable?

They are interchangeable but the fastening method is different, i went the opposite way by installing the black lettered earlier reflector
on my 89.You have to remove, cut and re-glue a bunch of stuff ...I did this about 5-6 years ago and it was an interesting project !

Yeah , if i remember i had to cut some tabs and relocate them.A dremel with a cutting disc and some good epoxy adhesive should do the trick.
It's not that complicated , you just have to measure twice and cut once !
Try to look at the PET and you should be able to see the difference between the earlier version and the later 87-89 version.
I personally liked the earlier version with the black Porsche lettering as compared to the "ghost " version of the later cars.
If you search the 911 forum on Pelican , i might have documented my adventure in a thread, same user name.

these reflectors if original are VERY pricey... i think the black lettered ones are very hard to find now.. so be VERY careful with messing with any of it.. I had to take mine off to replace the rubber seal between the bumper and body.. pretty terrifying experience lol.
