Default '87 rear brake rebuild kit question

What is the metal ring that came in my ATE rebuild kit? The o-ring and the boot are obvious, and I they were on the brakes when I took them apart. I looked through the instruction and Googled around, but I don't see where the metal ring goes.

The rings are at the bottom in this pic. (Not the clips!)

Looks like the kit for an early 911/912.

I believe that the ring secures the boot to the caliper where the boot overlaps.
