'88 Targa- wheel bearings- first post
Howdy gang, long time member over in the 997 forum, but I have a question about my Targa. Great little car, my dad bought it brand new at Max Dial in Santa Monica back in the day. Sits on my lift much of the time but she gets her workouts monthly or so.
Question is, what should I expect to pay per corner at an indy for wheel bearing replacement? Los Angeles area. LMK, and thanks friends!

Hi Tim. Welcome to the air-cooled section. Beautiful looking Targa.
Can’t help you with the cost, other than to say the fronts are easy and the rear can be a pain.
Are they making noise? What makes you think they all need to be replaced?

Awesome you still have your dad's car. As noted, the fronts are no big deal but the rears are a lot more invasive. I did mine preventatively while doing the entire suspension. We removed everything and sent it off to elephant racing where they refinished and installed all new bushings and rear wheel bearings. Depending on how the suspension is performing, and if you have a typical wheel bearing noise off load of wurr wurr wurr, you may want to defer. I'd guess doing rear wheel bearings would be in the 750 range if that's all they had to do, while the fronts much less.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. The driver's side rear was really howling and the shop foreman confirmed my suspicion. It's in the shop now- just going to do the one bearing. Thanks!

FYI i had one driver's side rear replaced and it was $600 (all labor, i provided the bearing)in the SF Bay Area. Supposedly the most stuck bearing they ever replaced and took 3 hours @$200/hr. Normally I try to do everything myself but from what I read the rear sounded like a real PIA job requiring as lot of leverage and heat.

So my indy shop (very reputable) wants $1,450 all in for the driver's side rear bearings. Sounds high doesn't it? However this is LA and I had to make an appt a full month ahead of time.... Thoughts?
