Default *** 911 84-89 paint meter readings, what is 'NORMAL'***

Hi,

Currently looking at an 87 black 911 3.2.

The body panels with paint meter readings show a range from 3.5 to 5.0. The majority of the panels demonstrate a range from 4 to 5 readings. Someone with bodywork experience suggested the paint seems unusually 'thin'.

Is that the normal expected paint thickness on the ORIGINAL 911 body panels? Anyone with an original 911 body have paint meter readings that are higher or is 3.5 to 5.0 the normal range?

Do not see obvious signs of overspray. No accident history. Vin stickers on body all look original and not transferred.

Thanks in advance.

Very normal.
if you search my post history you’ll find my 89 i sold here that had original paint. Some areas thinner than that from polishing. Single stage red.
is car a Metallic? That will read higher.

Makes sense as the color code '700' black is single stage.

I just did some minor paint correcting on my '87 which has all original paint (single stage).

The lowest readings I took on it were just under 5 mils and that was in just a very few locations. Most readings were 5 to 6 mils. A few areas (engine compartment lid for example) were close to 8 mils.
