I have two collector's vehicles, a 1987 Carrera and a 1985 Toyota FJ60. I am thinking of relocating the cars from New Mexico to Colorado, specifically the Denver area. By age, both vehicles are exempt from emissions testing requirements in New Mexico. (Vehicles 35+ years old are exempt). I am wondering if the same holds true for Colorado? Can any of you Colorado folks give me a little info on the Colorado requirements for exemption of collector's vehicles? Thanks much.
I bought my 85 last year in June from a Colorado resident. It was smog exempt at that time and was last smogged in April 2018. The owner represented it was smog exempt and was registered annually after 2018. Before it was biannual.
The owner had it smogged as part of the sale and it passed. But failed in California and I had to replace the cat.
Leave your cars registered in NM if you can help it.
If you are in any metro area where emission testing is required, those vehicles are new enough to need emission testing. They will be emission exempt when you can switch to collector plate which is around 1976 and older. Do yourself a favor and call and ask: Arapahoe County (303) 795-4500
Under Colorado law, vehicles 1975 and earlier can be registered as collector vehicles and are exempt from emissions testing. Your '85 and '87 will not qualify as collector vehicles in Colorado. Also, if you move to Colorado from another state you must register your out-of-state vehicle in Colorado within 90 days after you qualify for residency (i.e. get paid using a Colorado address); if you do not and are caught, the penalty is rather severe.
