Starter Not Turning
went on a club run yesterday and everything worked as it should but when I went out today to start it I just get a definite click from the back underside that I presume is the starter solenoid.
battery is good at 12.7 volts so am thinking maybe the solenoid, earths or power supply.
if I connect the battery directly to the starter to check the power supply can I damage anything.
any other thoughts on what it could be?
edit: just went out to the garage and it started right up, not sure if that makes it better or worse

Pay special attention to starter solenoid.
If the starter commutator look evenly colored, resist yout temptation to clean it with emery paper. This is the part where the carbons touch.
Even if your car now work, cars don’t heal, they have to be repaired. It’s much better to fix things at your schedule insted when you go somewhere and the car won’t start.
The starter motor could still be toast though and that stranded cable fried that runs from the starter to the solenoid.
also put it in neutral and see if the crank will turn ... likely will but always good to check .
