Default Porsche Charge-O-Mat

I've used my trusty Porsche Charge-o-mat as a battery maintainer for the past 16 years - first on my 2001 Boxster S, and for the last few years on my 997.2. I've always used it via the cigarette lighter socket.

Question regarding an '87 3.2 car - will I still be able to use this battery maintainer in the same way?

Thanks...

On my 77 and I think my 82 the ciggie socket is not just a European cigar lighter (it's slightly bigger and you'll need to modify it to make proper ciggie socket things fit [still haven't done this myself, sigh]) but more importantly the ciggie socket is on switched power, and not constant so this wouldn't really work.

My advice would be to buy a regular battery tender and just stick it right on the battery itself.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll look into it further just to confirm.

My '85 is the same: the cig lighter outlet switches off when the key is out.

BTW, that is not normal based on all the German cars I have ever owned, including my current Cayenne and X5. Normal for German cars seems to be to keep the cig lighter outlets / power outlets on all the time.

Interesting that you mention it - my E90 and E92 are both switched power, whereas my E46 and I believe my E38 are constant (however, I do recall reading on the E38 switching the outlet off when the car goes into a deep sleep mode [15 minutes after locking] but I've not tested it).

Of course it's easy enough to rectify in our cars if you really wanted to - all you'd have to do is move the input of the ciggie fuse onto live versus having it come from the ignition switch, no?

I have the charge-o-mat for my wife's 08 Cayman and use it. Wouldn't work on the 88 911 due to power socket not being hot when turned off so I did the fixed leads from the battery to the new Porsche Classic battery charger and connect it through the frunk when not being driven.

So that's what a Porsche charger looks like ?
I remember when i bought my car 12 years ago, the PO had installed a new $400.00 dollar Porsche battery that crapped
out on me before it was two years old.Anyhow i brought it in and they wouldn't warranty it because i didn't maintain it with a Porsche charger ... i didn't know better at the time !

After some polite arguing i told the service guy at the dealer to stuff it up his a*s and keep it , i went to my Ford dealer and picked up a new battery for $80.00

Cheers
Phil
