Yeah, 1980 is before the new standardized VIN system that everyone uses. I'm not sure how to pull that info...

the lady at gieco is telling me that any 10 digit vin is a "salvage" title.

That would mean all pre-80 cars are salvaged ????

weird stuff

No, the Geico lady is incorrect. The 17 digit VIN system used today throughout the world was first used on 1981 model year cars...it's as simple as that.

From the Porsche 911 Red Book: 1980 Carrera Coupes in America had 10 digit VINs, the range is:

91AO140001-91AO144272 (4272 produced)

Hope this helps...your VIN should fall in between those values.

i'm still on the phone. she finally found out that it suppossed to have only 10 digits.

it's gonna cost me an extra 1100 a year for insurance, damn.

1700 for just my VW golf
2800 for the golf and an SC

You should check out American Collectors or Hagerty if this will be a second cars not used for daily driving. The savings is signficant. I pay about $280 a year for an agreed upon value of $16K for my SC. Both companies have websites. Just do a search under the names.

a few problems with collectors insurance

1. the car isn't 25 years old
2. i'm not 28 years old
3. i have 2 moving violations above 15+mph

those three things rules out just about any of the collector type insurance companies.
