3.2 Oxygen Sensor Wiring

3.2 Oxygen Sensor Wiring
I noticed that the last shop to drop my motor did not plug the O2 sensor back together. There is a brown wire and a yellow wire from the car. The O2 sensor has two white wires. Does it matter which pin the brown and yellow go to? If so, how can I tell which white wire is which at the sensor? With ohm continuity? Seems to be running OK now.
As always, thank you all for your expertise and JD for all he does.
See all of you at the Hershey Swap, April 24, 2004 which is only 16 days away.

Loren,
Thank you for your reply. Let me see if I can clarify my problem. The Green harness wire from pin 24 is connected through a round connector. Then there are 2 white wires that come from the O2 sensor. One is the heater and the other is the shielding, according to Bentleys. How can I tell which white wire is which and to which one the yellow (heater) and brown (ground) connects. I have touched each white O2 pin with my ohmmeter and can't determine a ground from either. Do I nead to remove the sensor? Stumped.

It all depends on the O2 type. The early Porsches had only a single shielded wire
usually green. The center goes to pin 24, the shield to 23. The later ones
used three with the others being for the heater. Your '84 should use only one
shielded wire (shield is ground) and the heater supplied by the fuel pump circuit.

I apologize for not making my posts clear enough as to the issue at hand. Perhaps a photo will help.
'84 Carrera 3.2, the new O2 sensor has 2 identical white wires and a black wire. The black clearly goes to the DME pin 24 green wire via a separate connector. A brown ground wire originates from DME pin 23. And the yellow heater wire arrives vis the pump relay. Green and blck clearly connect. But how do I tell which White wire is ground and which is heater, or doesn't it make a difference. I tried an ohmmeter to each white wire pin, then to the O2 sensor at the body of the sensor and it's exhaust connections without any success. Perhaps it does'nt make any difference, but please help.
Thanks again, Steve
