Default 83SC Wouldn't Turn Over

Looking for some advice. Had the car for 5 years. Always started.

Last week, drove for 90 minutes approx 130km. Turned the car off for 25 minutes. Came back and the car wouldn't start. It was night and all lights were good, no diming, but when I went to start it there was just kind of a hum. Didn't crank.

So I left it for a bit - let's say 30 min. In those 30 mins I tried a few more times and nothing. Then one time it did start. Car didn't fully cool down..was a bit under 180 degrees. Drove back home (90 min). In the driveway turned it off, and tried to start it - wouldn't start.

So I covered it up and went to bed.

The next morning went out, tried to start it nothing. Same symptoms. Tried 3-4 times then it finally started. Turned it right off. Tried again wouldn't start.

I jacked the car up (just using the side lift plate) and it started. I didn't do anything to it. Just literally jacked it.

Then today, went out fired up no problem. Did it like 3 times all good. Drove around, it's hot got it up to 190 - 200 degrees came back. Shut off, started up. Did that twice today no problems.

I checked the battery and it was good.

I was going to check the ground strap, see if I can my meter on the starter, and measure but with it working I'm not sure there is anything I can check.

Looking for advice if anyone has any since i'm now worried that I'll be out and the car will just decide not to start again.

Here is a video - if you listen carefully you can hear the hum when I try and turn it over.

Default Starter solenoid (relay)

The problem is probably the starter solenoid. This is a common problem with starter motors.

likely the starter, ( solenoid ) but i would certainly remove clean and reconnect the large ground strap that attaches to the transmission cross brace, the battery terminals also sometimes feel tight with a wrench but are loose on the posts.

yes - take the big ground strap off entirely and examine both mounting points carefully for corrosion - be sure the strap is flexible and not missing any strands

they are cheap
