Post Just got my porsche today!!

I picked up my 1976 911S today and I can't wait to start working on it. Seems like a good car, has power windows, p/sunroof, AC, cruise control, I think every option available on a 1976. The motor has the carrera tensioners and all the other upgrades. THe motor has about 100,000 miles on the rebuild that is in it. It runs ok but may need a little tuning. THe trans has a few issues but is functional.

Questions:
How many miles can you normally get out an engine?
I think the syncros in the trans are going bad, and the shifter is all over the place. What can I do to fix the shifter?

Thanks, this is my first porsche

Jeff

Congrats, 911 ownership is one of those great things in life!

As far as engine life Porsche engines can last a really long time because of the attention paid to detail and engineering. That said it's almost impossible to predict the life of a rebuild. It could be 5,000 miles, 50,000 miles, or maybe +250,000 miles. Due to differences in build quality, attention to detail, owner maintenance, etc.... I would say if yours has gone 100,000miles since the rebuild it must have been a pretty good rebuild.

Get Wayne's (from Pelican Parts) book 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911this will likely cover most of the stuff that you will be doing or needing to do. Fixing the shifter shouldn't be too bad. It seems there are some plastic bushings that go bad that cause slop. I would think replacing those, maybe the rubber coupler, and adjusting everything will do the trick. Read what you can about the cars, Bruce Anderson's Porsche 911 Performance Handbook is considered the bible by most. Also, if you don't already know, learn about shifting and shifting technique "double clutching", rev matching, etc.... Unless you are ready to shell out the bucks for the tranny work (fixing the shifter will probably help tons) this info will probably make life easier on you and the tranny and prolong the life that is left in it before you have to get the tranny done. You are in the right place for info and help. Welcome!!
