I was driving my 1988 911 wide-body cabriolet on Sunday and started noticing a strange smell. I keep driving onto my destination about 10 miles away.
When I got out of the car, the smell was stronger and I could hear a ticking sound coming from the frunk. Once I opened it, I could see the AGM battery was swollen up and ticking...it looks like it was about to bust. I disconnected the battery and had it flat-bedded to the indy I use.
They checked it out and said the alternator was over charging the battery. The alternator came in today and I expect to pick up the car on Monday.

Good discussion over on the bird about overcharging and adding a voltmeter for this very reason:

I got a cheap cigarette lighter one for now. Works pretty well, costs about $10.
