Post Upgrading muffler/cat bypass for '84 911

I'm looking for some advice and feedback on what system to go with for upgrading my (stock) exhaust system. I don't want to go much over $1000. I am seriously considering the mirror finish set-up FabSpeed offers with a cat-look test pipe and dual exhaust vs. my standard single. My other choice is a Dansk. I've heard bad things about the Bursch and some people think the B&B is too loud with too much resonance. Anyone out there willing to share some lessons learned with any of the above?

You can't beat the fitment of the factory style sausage shaped mufflers. I've had two B&B mufflers- one cat-back and one header muffler. Both hung a little crooked (despite lots of bracket adjustment) and hang a little too low for my tastes. The factory style sausage mufflers tuck under the rear valance nicely. They last a long time too (the original Porsche ones).

If I were to do this upgrade today, I'd choose a Fabspeed euro premuffler with a Dansk muffler or a set of SSI heat exchangers with the appropriate Dansk muffler. I think Dansk is a decent substitute to the factory arrangement. Fabspeed makes nice stuff and GHL stands behind their product. B&B is a different story.

Thumbs up

I installed a Bursch cat by-pass pipe and Dansk sport muffler (single in, single out) on my '84 911.

The Bursch pipe works fine and it has the fitting for the O2 sensor. The Fabspeed euro pre-muffler looks a lot nicer and is stainless; I don't think the Bursch is stainless, but it only cost $110.

I love the Dansk sport muffler. I looks and fits just like the OEM muffler; I used the original muffler straps to install it. The fit/alignment with the Bursch cat pipe was perfect. The Dansk's exhaust outlet has a larger diameter than the OEM muffler. The Dansk Sport has a 84MM outlet; I think the OEM is approx. 70MM.

The Dansk is not to loud, just a little more aggressive sound than OEM.

Hey Bruce:

That setup is exactly what I'm thinking of putting on my '84. What did you notice (assuming there is something) in the performance improvement category?

I'd like a little more zip especially low and mid range, and a little more sound.

I'm in the middle of changing my exhaust system right now. Car is an '88 Carrera. I got a GREAT deal on a new old stock Bursch and a Bursch cat pipe, so I went with that. I just shipped them this morning to Jet-Hot for ceramic coating, to help keep the temperatures down and to get more longevity from them since they're not stainless. I'll let you know how they work out.

Ed,

My "butt dyno" tells me the cat by-pass pipe and Dansk sport muffler gave my car a performance increase. Of course, this is a subjective opinion since my car has never been on a dyno. I also have a Autothority chip which I installed a little time before the exhaust mods (I could feel a difference with just the exhaust mods).

The car revs quicker throught all RPM's. Engine oil temps run a little cooler without the cat. Exhaust noise was a noticable increase, but not loud or resonating (It sounds like a sports car should). The wife will still ride in the car if that tells you anything. I am still able to comply with Lime Rock's 89-90 dB noise limits.

I recommend you make the exhaust change, because I know you will be pleased. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
