87 911 VIN date question

I'm looking at an 87 911 that is registered as an 87 year model. In the VIN code, the portion relating to the year is H which denotes 86. Is this the manufacturing date? Any thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance, Joe

"H" Program cars are model year '87, built from Aug. '86 to July '87. Check the date of production on the driver's door jam for confirmation, plus the EPA / DOT certification decals. My MY '87 has H in the serial # sequence, too.
The Porsche 911 "Red Book" is a good (but not infallable) reference. Happy Hunting!

Yep, "H" is the code for an '87 MY car. If you have looked at an '88 (VIN code "J") something later you may have counted the letter "I". The letter "I" wasn't used so there could be no confusion with the number "1". So '87 is "H" and '88 is "J" etc....

Sports Car Market is the only monthly that I manage to read at least twice monthly. Might be hard to find, so here's a link...www.sportscarmarket.com
