Default Problem with R12 recharge. low side pressures high

87 911 R12 worked ok but compressor front seal leaking some oil. Changed drier and compressor. System did not pick up R12 well on recharge. came in spurts. stopped after 28-30 oz.took > 1hr. should take either 41 (Dempsey book) or 47oz(Bentley) sight glass had lots of bublbes. was not cooling great. Low sides 45-60 high side ok. What is the problem? Sticky evap valve?

Apologies if this is a silly question: Did you use a vacuum pump to evacuate the system before recharging?
