Hey guys,
I just purchased a black 87 cab w/60k miles on it for 19k. The car is immaculate with the exception of a few stone chips and a slight tear in the headliner (no big deal). I am very happy with the car................therefore there are some nice late 80's 911's out there at a decent price.

I bought a guards red 88 Coupe (blk int) with 115k for 17k. Needs valve adj and clutch is going. So make it 18.5k. paint is perfect and interior is beautiful (came with Momo wheel and gearknob). The good cars are out there... you need to widen your search area. I live in Charlotte NC and picked up this car in Texas. U get a lot of pics from the PO (be as **** as you want, get every angle and every detail, these days with digicams anybody can do it and it costs nothing), get a PPI, and if everything checks the flight is 300 to 500. Drive it back to your home.... It's a way to get to know the car...

He's scared from the last two cases - one car actually needed BOTTOM end work. Can you believe that? I don't think I've EVER seen that in a 911. The guy must have driven around with 5 qts of oil for awhile : )

I bought my 964 cabriolet because I could not find a great 3.2 cabriolet to replace my 88 cabriolet that I totaled. I originally thought of the 964 as the ugly duckling of the 911 and did not give them much thought. I am very happy with my 964 carbiolet and have come full circle about the 964 model. The looks have grown on me and I prefer the way they drive and handle. Much easier car to drive aggressively. Still plenty raw feeling, but not something you mind driving every day, in the heat and in traffic. I would still like to have another 3.2, but I wouldn't trade my 964 for one.

Bottomline:

The 3.2 Porsche is a much more reliable and less costly 911 in the long term
to operate than the 964.

Logic will tell us that since the 964 is a more complex car, it will cost more to maintain and more things may break over time. But, that is not to say the 964 is an unreliable 911. They (964's) are quite solid cars overall.

I think the logical conclusion of the above statement is incorrect:

"But, that is not to say the 964 is an unreliable 911. They (964's) are quite solid cars overall."

One would more correctly conclude that the 964 is less reliable, as reliability exists
on a continuum, based on the first senctence.

IMHO, you're better off buying a very nice SC for the upper end of your price range than a Carrera 3.2 that isn't so nice. For a given $ the SC gets you a car in better condition. You'll find it very tough to find a G50 Carrera for under $15K that is anywhere near decent, same thing for an under $12K 915-box Carrera, or an under $10K SC. You're likely to spend $$$ on them after purchase. But $15K will buy you a very nice SC that shouldn't cost you much afterwards.

True about repair costs, but my SC and 88 also had their fair share of upkeep costs. If the 964 is sorted and has the updates, I don't think it will be that much more in the long run. Seems like others on the 964 forum that have sorted updated cars have very low maintenance also.
