Default Replacing front shocks

I am going to have new front shocks installed in my 911SC. What is the compound that surrounds the top of the shock tower inside the trunk? Should the old compound be cleaned off first?

No, just add something to seal the area from water splash. Dum dum works.

Digressive valving is well worth the small expense.

Just work on covering the area properly, you don’t have to clean off totally.

does that goop even cover the shock itself? I'm trying to recall... unless you're replacing the upper mount also it should be doable w/o dealing with the goo.

I'm pretty sure i did the shocks on my 89 and it didn't get touched. my 71 has been apart and the goo isn't as crazy as the factory setup, but same, i replaced top mount rubber (elephant) plus new digressive shocks (highly suggested!) and didn't touch the goo...
