i guess another question to the question might be ... Top end or case split ?

Many 911s can have a top end only depending on the year and mileage as the bottom end on these cars seems pretty solid.

I was debating whether to respond to this one because there are so many variables. It could be $12K. It could also easily be $25K.

What displacement? Aluminum or mag case? P&Cs need replacing? Mechanical fuel injection needing work? How much head work? Turbo? Etc....

Mark

Mark is spot on - this has a huge potential range. Answering his initial questions and iceman's question about splitting the case will help narrow the range. Mag case and MFI = $$$ ... ask me how I know

i'm currently having a top end rebuild done on my 1983 911 SC. cost: $17,000. including new pistons & cylinders, 964 cams. head studs, valve springs. without the P&C's it would have been around $12k.

parts: $7,850
labor: $9425 (55 hours)

add on another $1200 for port & polish cylinder heads

did you consider converting it to a 3.2 since you were getting new P and C anyway ?

Admittedly, I did not consider that. Initially the plan was just replacing the piston rings, but once things were open there was more damage found. In addition, the car was in need of other deferred maintenance from the previous owner(s). Also replacing clutch, rebuild front brake calipers, engine fan, turbo tie rods, CV boots, new windshield/windshield seal, replace the 16 year old tires that were on it etc... By this point I wasn't actively trying to increase the bill haha

I did get the higher compression 9.8:1 pistons, which I understand should be equivalent to the "euro spec" of that model year.

Yup cost is a big question mark. So many variables. I was all in at $9,000 but some of those items were what I consider long term maintenance. (Fuel lines, cam oil lines, Plug wires, Dist cap, alternator). Some of my cost was clean up (new engine sound pad, tumbling
the upper intake, fan shroud..ect) . On top of that cost I had my exhaust completely redone. Exhaust pricing is all over the place too (new, used...ect). I also did A/C work not associated with my engine work.....again those cost vary greatly.

"a lot" generally
Varies highly
You don't want to know what mine is costing.

Generally, depends on scope of work.
Labor hours are pretty consistent, mostly. Rates vary highly based on location.

The parts on these engines will bring a tear to your eye.

I was in a similar boat.. i redid the top end.. on my Sc after a broken head stud. i did a little research and thought about running 3.2 pistons with existing CIS and a 964 cam .
unfortunately my pistons and cylinders were perfect so i had to put them back in.

Similar inquiry over @ Pelican
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...l#post10763616

Mike in CT made a nice spreadsheet of the parts list with oem part numbers and prices, (Thanks Mike!)

Interesting the range of prices. It varies: what needs replacing vs. what can be re-used
How much will you do your self .. if you hire someone ... who? Any upgrades from stock? 964 cams? Yes, please.
new vs. used parts ...what can you find cheap? Used but still worth putting in vs. what HAS to be new..
top end / bottom end/? brand of cylinders ? Gaskets oil nuts and bolts how clean will you get the case, what method of cleaning etc.
tools
etc.
either way.... not cheap!

^That is a good thread and has a lot of actual/useful data in it. I don't believe it had costs for case machine work - if using a Mag case, then this needs to be included as well and could be upwards of a few thousand dollars depending on work. I agree with the comments about the P&C's being the, or one of the, most expensive single items - and this can range quite a bit depending on what type/brand you go with. I would also include ignition and fuel delivery in these estimates, and this is another area where costs begin to add up quickly and you should refresh several items. Oh, and don't forget oil cooler(s) -- you really want to ensure those are cleaned and pressure tested. With my build, I am trying to ensure that everything is flushed (lines, tank, coolers) so that there isn't a chance that material from my prior worn out motor doesn't find its way into my new motor.
