I agree with Mark, I have seen this happen, too thick does make it brittle some times. It seems you could almost chip it thumping it with your finger nail. A lot of times this is also caused from poor surface prep, have to have good prep and the color applied within the time frame for the primer, if it is not applied in the amount of time that is required for the primer, the paint will not stick like it should. I have seen many shoot primer and think they can then go back and paint it whenever they want, it does not work that way on these paints we use today. They have only a limited open time, then you have to reprime, or wipe down with the recommended solvent to get the primer active again for optimum paint adhesion.

I was investigating a repaint in the LA area and was quoted a low of $3,500 and a high of $5,000 - $6,000. The lower bid was from a larger body shop who claimed to know how to do it well. They had told me (as most of you have already commented) that most of the $$ was in the prep.

The more expensive job was from a high-end specialist who focuses on very high-end show quality jobs and restoratations.

I was shocked at the prices of this service.

FYI - I didn't go through w/ it so I can't comment on the outcome, but I thought I'd share the results of some of my research.

It could very well be. I don't know quite enough about automotive paint to be certain. Either way, it's about the only complaint that I had with the whole process and I felt I should list all of the con's as well as the pro's.

8k is alot for a car that hasn't been smashed here in NYC. i've seen show quality paint for 8-10k but that usually includes fitting bodykits and pulling fenders or welding on other tidbits.

The best advise is to go around to different shops and ask to take a walk around. Most good shops will be very proud of their work and be happy to show you their latest masterpiece.

a good exterior only in the same color, i'd guess a good one could be done for 4k

Justin,

Couldn't even buy the paint for 450 Euros in the UK!
