"improved and refined" -- BOth Kahuna and Grant make good points. But refinement is not always improvement. Some things were better in every way (e.g. Al banana arms were cheaper, stronger, and lighter -- that's hard to beat). Others were not better in sportiness.

What some have done (e.g. me) is to pick and choose Carrera parts to put on their early car -- the entire suspension and brakes + the engine (suitably backdated to carbs and SSis).

The technology evolved and that continues -- today a do it yourselfer can use CF parts that even PAG didn't have on their race cars way back when.

Oh yeh - get a Carrera over an SC -- CIS sucks.

This is an easy one, folks. You can tell by the name. The SC is the SUPER Carrera, and not a plain old Carrera.

Yes, I'm kidding.

SC may have a more reliable engine. Carrera G50 may have a more reliable gearbox. I would bet those lucky enough to own both probably have one as a dedicated track car.

And I don't think CIS sucks. Dead simple, easy to diagnose and fix, and can handle some upgrades with no new chip needed. Worked for Porsche for over a decade if you include the mighty 930s. To know K-Jet is to love K-Jet.

I know K-Jet, I served with K-Jet in both Saabs and two Porsches, and you are no K-Jet... Oh wait, wrong flashback.

My problems are the glacially slow throttle response, the inability to hot rod it, the difficulty in diagnosing the myriad peices (rel. to carbs or even MFI).... It was a great thing for fuel economy in its day. But its day is done.

BTW, folks SC actually stand for Stupor Car.

Actually CIS is a very simple system. The problem for porsches is that on a 911 it is BIG! almost as big as the engine. As long as the intake is clean and there are no vacuum leaks (and no one messes with the allen adjustment screw, grrrrr) you are fine.

Does Dan Quayle ring any bells? Very embarassing moment. Still won though.
