Post '80 911 Targa Newbie Questions

I just bought an '80 Targa with 120K, 2nd owner, all records, California car, chain tensioners done, nice int/ext, etc. Paid 11.5K
-Did I get a good deal?
-Should I switch to synthetic oil? I plan on using it as my daily driver in Los Angeles.
-The previous owner did not realize (!) that it appears to have cruise control. If she did not use it (for 6 years) is there any danger in trying it out? Should I have it checked?
Any info, comments would be appreciated!
Great board!

I use regular dino with a change every 3,000 miles, you will get a lot of different opinions on this. The cruise control probably does not work as this is a problem area in these older cars.

In their June 2001 technical bulletin, Porsche revised the temperature ranges that various oils should be used for. Specifically, they lowered the top end on the xW-40's from 100f to 85f. They oils and ranges are:

SAE 10W-40...-20c/approx 0f to +30c/85f
SAE 10W-50...-20c/approx 0f to greater than +30c/85F
SAE 5W-40....-25c/-10f to +30c/85f
SAE 5W-50....-25c/-10f to greater than +30c/85f
SAE 0W-40....below approx -30c/-20f to +30c/85f

SAE 5W-30 and 5W-20 are noted for arctic climates and extreme low temperatures.

The Porsche recommended oils for all 4,6, and 8 cylinder engines from 1973 forward are:

Castrol/Syntec......................................5W-50
Mobil 1...............................................0W-40, 5W-40
Sun Oil/Sunoco Synturo Gold.................5W-40
Texaco/Havoline Formula 3 Synthetic....5W-40
Valvoline/High Performance Synthetic...5W-30

Alan Caldwell notes that due to leak potential in older engines, he doesn't recommend synthetics in engines earlier than 1978 unless they've been rebuilt/resealed.

Many who track their 911's use a xW-50 weight oil. I use Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic, however, there are other choices.

My wrench told me this morning that one should not use synthetic oil in the older cars (mine's an 84). He said the cars simply were not designed for the synthetic blends, and run much better on conventional 20w-50 oil. He uses Kendall.

When I had my 78 rebuilt/resealed I asked if I should use synthetic or ? My mechanic highly reccomended using 20w-50, specifically Kendall. I think Swepco might be a good choice as well.
