Default Motor out!!!

Took her in month or so ago for what appeared to be a simple fix. Car was bucking at low rpm and a new ICV was put in, which appeared to have fixed the problem. After few hundred miles / months, smelled real rich and was starting to buck again.
Swung by for some quick tweaking, but my mechanic couldn't simply dial in w/ some minor adjustments. Left car overnight, smoke test was done, etc. and it was discovered that the crank shaft gasket was shot / leaking and also the intake runner seals were failing.
This all a big job to replace man hour wise, so while she's out, I'm having both timing chain housings resealed (been leaking since I bought from prev owner in '11, but in only paod $17k ) and also resurfacing the flywheel. Previous shop didn't think flywheel needed it and it has a slight vibration at times. I figure while she's out, let's do it. This way when done, she will be 100% leak free (RARE) and all set clutch wise. Looking at an easy 40hr job, but my INDY has a great rate of around $85. So all said and done, I'll prob be out $5k, but will add great re-sale value to car (if I ever get rid of it). lol
Here's a couple pics of her out and i'll post along the way, pining for her back, weather is perfect this time of year!

Good luck! Hopefully no surprises along the way.

Proof is in the pudding! Motor being stripped down and here's what's been discovered, which my mechanic expected. The gasket was original, so assume age got it more than mileage, since there's only 83k on the clock. Here's the evidence!

….and the slippery slope begins ….

yup breather cover gasket leaking . God knows why they didn't groove and oring this spot. the triangle of death is such a nightmare and could have been so easily solved.

rest looks pretty solid. I doubt anything at all will be out of tolerance if there was nothing out on mine at 240K KM . Machine shop put new seals in. said they would not do anything else as it would be like cutting into a healthy patient.

Yup and i'm sliding down it! 3 cylinders also have leaking valves, so heads being sent out too. Hey at least once I get her back, should be good for another 35 years!

One thing I will replace if I remove the engine are all the fuel lines. I’m sure my 40 year old rubber hose would benefit from being replaced.

No head studs? Also check the cams for pitting/wear.

Parts are back from machine shop and she's being rebuilt as we speak. I have a Metro PCA fall trek this Sat, so the deadline I set for the shop was this Friday. Fingers crossed....

So it was discovered that all my exhaust valves were bent as well on top of all the other issues listed above! I guess the "triangle of death" caused all this?!

All back together and runs even better than she looks, if you can believe it! My shop put a personal touch in polishing up the fan, housing, painting / cleaning all the bits, etc. Took her to a PCA trek event that day and all were very impressed. Good to be back in action!!!
