Default Idle Issue When Air Fuel Mix Isn't Lean

I'm having issues with the idle on my car. The only way my shop can get the car to idle is to lean the mixture out my adjusting the internals on the air flow meter. To idle, the mixture needs to the point where the car is running too lean. When we have the mixture at a good balance where we have a good air to fuel ratio and the mix is richer, the car will not idle. It stalls when I depress the clutch to stop the car at a red light. Additionally, when I start the car up, the engine starts but immediately dies. This is a stock ROW 3.2 motor. Any advice would be welcomed!

We are going to smoke test and check for that, stlrj.

Make sure you check the idle switch for proper operation and adjustment.

Steve, is this the idle control valve?

No, it is located on the end of the throttle (butterfly) shaft. It is sometimes referred to as the throttle position sensor. It consists of two sets of contacts, one the makes a connection at idle (idle switch) and the other that makes contact at full throttle (typically above 75% throttle).

Has your shop checked the base idle adjustment?

The car is home right now. The shop is an hour away and I'll be taking it there at the end of the month. Is the base idle adjustment the screw on the throttle body?

Yes, base idle is the screw on the throttle body. to set base idle you need to install a jumper between pins B and C on the test connector (page 24-7 in factory WSM) on the left side of the engine bay inner fender. this deactivates the idle control valve and allows for base idle adjustment. remove jumper when finished.

I can try that on my own. I assume the car needs to be warm.

Yes, you want the engine up to full operating temp.

Hi Chad,

I just bought an 84 911 Carrera, and it's having similar issues, so I'm following your thread with interest! Any update? Thanks!

Hi, Uncle Sol.

I've got a new solid state DME ordered and I'm going to see what that does. After that, I'm going to bypass the idle control and set the idle on the throttle body. I'll keep the thread up to date, sir!
