Default Help needed in identifying vin #

I’m looking at an 81 911 wide body for sale. The vin clearly has zzz in it , indicating it is a European model yet the speedometer is in miles. Can someone clarify that for me please.

Also, The owner isn’t totally educated about g series Porsche’s, and I am only becoming educated. The car is said to be an all steel wide body with turbo badges. Is it true that in 81, turbo cars weren’t available in the US but you could order every bit of a 930 but without the engine. I’m wondering if this is that type of car. But that doesn’t explain the zzz designation in the vin.

Vin number is wp0zzz91zbs10156

Welcome to Rennlist! Is there any paperwork indicating when the car was imported and if it was Federalized? One of the requirements would have been to replace the speedometer, meaning the mileage is likely more than shown.

Porsche did offer a factory Turbo-look option, but not until 1984. Most likely this car had the flares and badges added later. Craftsmanship varies, so be careful especially if the seller wants a premium. It also probably doesn’t have Turbo brakes or suspension.

Using Stuttcars.com I was able to break down the vin. It confirmed it was an 81, European, built at Stuttgart and the only option (566) was fog lamps. But how does one identify the factory sunroof from that vin number?

yes, the Porsche vin lookup gave me nothing as well but I see many people complaining that the site hasn’t been functioning. The vin number I have is plain as day so I’m sure it’s correct.

You can’t deduce any options from the VIN. Later cars had option stickers under the hood, but I don’t think they were doing that in 1981.
