Default '74 2.4T - full or light engine rebulild?

Hey guys,

I’m restoring a 2.4 911T as a long-term project and I haven’t decided what to do with the engine.

The engine was running but producing a lot of smoke. Of course I have no idea about the mileage of the car (though it is the matching numbers engine).

As I see it I have two options:

A) Remove everything down to the cylinders and have them reworked by a shop.
B) Rebuild the complete engine including splitting the block.

Option A is of course much, much cheaper because I can tackle most of the work myself. Splitting (or rather reassembling) the block, however, is something that I might not feel comfortable doing in my garage…

What do you guys think – is there a big chance I will regret not going the full way?
Are there ways to determining the condition of the deeper internals (crank bearings, etc.) without a full disassembly?

thanks!

it's probably a game time call. How many miles on the engine? Ever had a top end done? Ever had a case split?

Normally you'll need to break it down and measure the pistons/tolerances. You can do rings w/o splitting the case... but you can't get at the bearings. An experienced builder can make a good assessment, but anything you can't see isn't a perfect evaluation.

No, I didn't. I guess I could still crank the engine with the starter but I'm not sure what I could learn. Heads and cylinders will be redone anyway.

oil analysis could have been worthwhile

but now, consider that splitting the case is not much more work beyond doing a top end - it is very DIYable; OTOH you posted above that it was a block, so carefully consider your ability to do DIY
