Default Side mirror spring compression

Wondering if any ones knows of a tool or how to compress the sprint inside the side mirror so that you can put the clip in. Mine came out and the spring is super hard to compress with pliers.

I did it on my '86 using a large flat blade screwdriver, which was perfectly sized to fit the slots in the bolt head. Be careful not to damage the wires.
