Most will say that it is not a good daily driver because of the 4 speed tranny. Also the maintenance is high just because these are older cars. Some Turbos this range have a 5speed tranny fitted after the fact, so, you might be able to find one of these.

I'm not sure that it would be the best thing to use a 23-26 yr old Turbo as a daily driver. I agree with Sonny above. Even if a car you find to buy is in mint condition, age takes it's toll and things can just wear out or break from the aging process. Turbos are more expensive to maintain than the normally aspirated 911s.
The '76 and '77 Turbo's used 245bhp, 253 ft. lbs of torque 3.0 liter engines that were not intercooled. The '78 & '79 Turbos used 3.3 liter, intercooled motors with 265 bhp and 291 ft. lbs of torque. The '76 and '77 Turbos used brakes from the normally aspirated 2.7 liter 911S. The '78 and newer Turbos used brakes from the 917 race cars.
For the same money as a nice turbo from those years, you could get yourself into a much newer 3.2 Carrera or even a 964 that might be better for an everyday car. I feel a normally aspirated car might be a better "around town" car.

Furthermore, if you're looking for maximum performance--and you're measuring that by (say) 0-60 mph times--a 3.2L Carrera is quicker than a very early Turbo. Porsche rated the 964 with the same 0-60 mph time as the '89 Turbo ( )! All of this without the added complexity or cost of a turbo.

I would highly discourage buying the 930 Turbo as a daily driver, the main reason being that it's very hard to drive the car in the rain. Granted we do live in So. Cal. and it doesn't rain often, it only takes one rainy day, one wet on-ramp and once you drop that right foot, the compressor has no mercy.....the surge of power will instantly set you into a wild spin, and I'd hate to see you destroy a 930. Your best choice would be to do what Randall said and pick up either a Carrera 3.2 or 964 Carrera and live with it, then maybe pick up the turbo as your weekend toy a little later.
