Default Black Targa Bars

A friend is interested in purchasing an 87 Targa. He asked whether the black targa bars are painted or treated metal or some other treatment so that they appeared black rather than anodized aluminum.

Thanks!

Must be some kind of paint as mine is chopped on a couple places, appears to have some thickness like paint.

Painted non-ferromagnetic metal, so I assume it is stainless steel.

They are painted, any good Porsche oriented paint shop can duplicate it.

I brought my targa bar cover to the local powder coat place. They powder coated it in satin black and looks fine.

when the time comes, ill be powdercoating mine as well. Just make sure you choose the correct powder (as there are many many black powders) and oven technique will yield a different result in some cases.

I just had my Targa bar sandblasted. I am unsure of weather to get a body shop to paint it or Powder coat. Paint will give better finish?

From the factory it is paint on stainless.
I've refinished in several methods over the years... had some painted including body color, stripped and refinished in stainless, as well as some powder coated. Powder was the quickest easiest finish.. less worry less prep. As "old man neri" said, satin black is fine, unless you prefer a semi-gloss black.

Have another Targa build going on now, can't remember if the Targa bar has gone out for powder yet.. I'll check and post if so.

Does the powder coat still look good after few years? Did you get a clear power coat on top of it?

Just thought I would provide an update for those who are thinking about refinishing their Targa bar. I got the Targa bar sandblasted, primed and powder coat in Satin black. I didn't like the finish at all, powder coat being thick it's earlier to chip on the edge. In the end I ending up sending it to Shaun at Tru6 to strip the powder coat and paint it with Cerakote. Looking great now. I'll post some picture when I get my car back from detailing.
