Repainting, have Qs about paint types / brand
I'm in California where bodyshops complain about restrictions and regulations. The latest one I heard was that just base coat (i.e. without a clear coat) is illegal in Calif. I had a non metallic car repainted in Glasurit solid coat only, no clear, 2 years ago. Is that really no longer allowed?
My usual painter is too busy so I'm going to use another shop. This shop stopped using Glasurit a few months ago. They now use Sherwin-Williams automotive paint which they say is easier to work with.
Has anyone had any experience with S/W automotive paint? I heard there was little difference between high end auto refinishing paint these days and that durability and warranty coverage is same.
Last question is regarding a base + clear coat repaint for a solid color that was base coat only from the factory. If you've tried that were you happy with the results? I imagine much better durability and ease of care but what about the appearance, does it look "funny"?

Hi Pete,
I've worked in a shop that was exclusively Sherwin-Williams. In my experience, both using the paint and having it on my vehicles, it is at least as good as Glasurit or any other paint out there. I personally find it nicer than Dupont and their support is excellent. I would not hesitate to allow it on your car.
As for using a base/clear for a panel (section) on a car with single stage paint, you must be careful. The base clear will often times have a different shine and may look different. If you are doing a whole car, there is no other way than base clear.
