Default Wow - Real 73 RSR at the track today!

Couldn't believe it - saw a cool 73 at the track with the Grand Prix white with Blue script. Then I noticed that it was a real RS (front hood revealed VIN# 911360078X besides original welded in strut brace). Then I noticed the wide front and rear fenders and BIG brakes and figured the car had been upgraded to RSR specs after the fact - no, it was an original factory M491

It did have a 3.0L motor (he still has original 2.8L) that has the high-butterfly MFI with a huge shiny pump, 12 plugs and all the goodies. Redlines at 8,600!

Unbelievably cool! Unfortunately, it lost an oil supply line and sprayed down the track (1 bike and 2 cars had bad offs right after).

He also brought along one of the 29 964 RS USA Cup cars...

Don't see that everyday...

The COOLEST thing about that story Grant, is that he still drives it in anger. A bud and I got into a discussion one night about rare, collectible cars, and the guy who only drives it OUT of the garage to rub it with a diaper is not truly in love with the car. It's just a posession, like Cameron's dad's Ferrari in "Ferris Bueller."

But the dude who still let's the thing rip truly appreciates what it was born to do...

I totally agree, but I'm not sure I'd drive it quite at 10/10, since there were only about 50 of those things and many were destroyed in races. In fact, the one I saw was badly damaged in 73 and has been rebuilt, so I guess I'd be more comfortable about tracking it...

Thanks! Yes, it's a bit daunting - but it was born to run

PS - I saw that RSR again at the track this past weekend - preparing to go to Florida for vintage racing...
